OWL ROOM | 4 TO 6 YEARS
Preschool and Pre-K educational programs to prepare your child for their bright future in kindergarten and beyond.
We’re here to work with your child on kindergarten readiness using DIG: Discover, Inspire, Grow. Children learn best through real-world contexts. DIG’s eight thematic units of integrated science, social studies, literacy, and math instruction help children make solid and lasting content connections. The predictable structure helps children anticipate what will happen next throughout the day and fully prepares them for the structure and routine of school.
Education
Beginning every late August we begin our Pre-K curriculum using a combination of D.I.G, Big Day for Pre-K, and Project Wild. Project Wild is a nature-inspired curriculum and is used during the Summer months. The focus is to celebrate nature by providing children with hands-on activities about wildlife.
Center areas are open multiple times throughout the day for children to explore freely:
Dramatic Play
Each month this station is set up with items related to the theme.
Exploration Station
Sensory
Art
Various art projects are completed here.
Math
Exploring with various math manipulatives.
Construction Zone
Block play.
Emergent Writing
Children will be challenged to write and draw about the monthly theme.
Letter People Place
Explore letters, letter sounds, Letter People.
Technology
Letter People alphabet and math games on the computer. The kids are allowed to do this center once a day for a maximum of 10 minutes.
Reading, Listening, and Theme Library
Our reading area is supplied with couches and lots of books to explore.
Along with the centers, your child will participate in a large group for Theme Circle, Literacy Circle, Math Circle, and Generation Mindful. Generation Mindful is a social/emotional curriculum that teaches children about their emotions-how to identify them and what to do with them.
Field Trips
This includes areas within walking distance. We will take various trips to the fire station, park, and library. We will walk to the Ronning Library across the street every Thursday for storytime. The children who have a library card and PIN can check out two books to take home. Books can be returned to the center and we will return them the next time we go. We attend the library in small groups so your child will go to the library every other Thursday. Your teachers will communicate with you which group your child is in and what cycle they are on.
Assessments
We will complete assessments on your child in September, January, and May. These assessments will help us know what skills your child has already mastered and what skills need to be focused on. These assessments will be sent home so parents are able to work on the skills at home.
Outside Play
We go outside year round in the morning and afternoon weather permitting. This may look like going to play on the playground, going to the park, or going for walks around the neighboorhood. Please bring sunscreen that can stay here as we go outside as often as we can in the spring, summer and fall. In the winter months we try to go outside when the weather is nice. Your child will need a winter coat, hat, waterproof gloves, snow pants, and snow boots daily as we try to go outside everyday. We will not go outside if the weather feels like 10 degrees or below.
OTHER OWL ROOM DETAILS
Meal Time
We eat all of our meals in our room and wash our hands before and after eating. A menu can be found via the Daily Connect app and posted in our classroom. We serve breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack on a schedule. Children continue drinking milk using cups with no lids at meal times. For water cups we use cups with lids and straws. Water breaks are given frequently throughout the day.
If you prefer your child isn’t served what is on the menu or if your child has an allergy to what is being served, you are required to bring them an alternative. You can choose to do this daily or bring food for the freezer and we can heat it up on the days needed.
Potty Time
We have several times throughout the day that are specified bathroom breaks, those are documented in our parent communication app. Other times your child uses the restroom may not be documented, but children are able to go to the restroom when needed.
Nap Time
Children in this room are given one afternoon nap that is right after lunch. Children sleep on cots and are given their blanket to be covered up with. Nap times are documented in the parent communication app.
In the spring Precious Angels will host an Owl Academy graduation ceremony where your child will graduate from our pre-k program and celebrate this big academic milestone before entering Kindergarten.
